We wish to formally inform the veterans of NMCB-3 of the passing of BUC Alvin "Al" O´Neil Ritter, on November 28 2017 in Oklahoma City, OK, after suffering from Parkinson´s for several years.

We apologize for not contacting the battalion before today, but his loss has left a hole in our lives that we have struggled to deal with.  Then this year we suffered another loss of our eldest daughter, Judy Ritter, to cancer.

Our family has retired to our family acreage SE of Guthrie, OK and have found solace in the peace, serenity & beauty of rural Oklahoma. Nearest paved road?  South: 2 miles; North: 1 mile north, 1 mile west.  East? One mile: dead end.

Our thoughts & prayers for all of you and your families.  May God watch over and protect you now and always.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Evelynne M. Ritter

Hello NMCB THREE Veterans and Friends,

My late father-in-law, Wayne L. Evans, served in NMCB THREE (I believe twice), I served in NMCB THREE (ALFA Company Commander, 1972 - 1974) and my grandson, Matthew C. Noles, is now serving in NMCB THREE.

Although my daughter, Aspen M. Noles, didn´t serve in NMCB THREE, she did start her Navy career as a Seabee.  So Grandson Matthew is a fourth-generation Seabee.

Best Wishes,

Robert V. (Bob) Parker

I served as a YN3 and then a YN2 with MCB3 at Chu Lai, Phu Bai and the advanced party to DaNang.

I left the Navy after 6 1/2 years and joined the Marines retiring in 1986 as a Captain. As a Marine 2ndLt I participated in the evacuation of Saigon in April 1975.

I just found out how important it is to visit the Guest Bood often.  I saw a post from Larry Chamblee and was able to speak with him today and we had some good memories.

I´m a  proud IPO who was on the Chu Lai and Phu Bai deployments, 1966-68.  In Chu Lai, I was an Alpha Co. Clerk and in Phu Bai, I was the Civil Affairs Petty Officer.  I ran the MedCap visits to a number of villages in  the Phu Bai area, where Dr.  Ellyson and Dr. Martin delivered medical and dental services to the villagers.  On those MedCap missions, I met a lot of guys who went as security.   I played guitar and sang in the MCB3 band with Frank Torpey (Vocals), Pat Monahan (The Beat), Hinchman (King of the Surf Guitar), and Super Clyde Johnson(Vocals).

I was pleased to see a post from Bill Brown, a good friend from MCB3. I´d like to hear from you, Bill. as well as my bandmates, my office mates Richard Mota and Smiley, Doc Dochnahl and the rest of you badass Bees.

After my WW2 tour of duty in the Navy I signed up with the Naval Reserve while attending college. At the outbreak of the Korean Conflict I was recalled to active duty as a DMS-3 and was sent to Port Hueneme where I joined up with MCB-3 in August of 1950. I went on two memorable deployments with the bees.

The first one was to Amchitka, Alaska where we built the test structures for the underground atomic bomb test. The actual test was several years later. Just getting there aboard the Aiken Victory was an adventure I will never forget. We were in the mother of all storms for days. It was like the movie Perfect Storm.

Our next deployment was a large group of folks and we went to Subic Bay, Lived in the jungle and started construction of the new airport there. MCB-5 got there later. Back in those days we traveled by ship. I went over on an AKA with some of our large equipment as part of the advanced party, We went through one typhoon but it was mild compared to my Alaskan experience. I returned on the General Altman, a large (old) cruise ship. I served as the Chaplain´s Assistant and ran the ships library.

My first child, my daughter Suzanne, was born at the base hospital in Port Hueneme while I was at Subic Bay.

When I returned to the States I separated from the Navy to finish my Degree at the University of Oregon in Architecture. Years later in 1976 I rejoined the Navy Reserve I cross rated back to a Builder rate and joined up with RNCB-18. I retired from the reserve in 1988 as a BUC. That´s quite a span of years 1944 to 1988. l

It was my honor to have served with NMCB 3 on the 1999 Kosovo Deployment.  I was a member of ALFA Company´s CM Shop.  I had been augmented to NMCB 3 from NMCB 28 as NMCB 3 needed additional Seabee Personnel in support of the Kosovo operation.  My history with NMCB 3 goes back to earlier in the year when both NMCB 28 and NMCB 3 worked together during the 1999 field exercise at Ft. Hunter Liggett.  I met some really great people in NMCB 3 and will always remember the mission and all of the hard work we did to accomplish success.  NMCB 3 received the Battle E for their success during the Kosovo operation.   Later in my career I again hooked up with NMCB 3 during a field exercise in 2003.  This time I was a Chief Select from NMCB 15. NMCB 3 got a hold of me and I had the privilege of going through some of their "Season" in which I will never forget.  In the later years when I would go to Port Hueneme I would run into someone who had been a member of NMCB 3 and especially visiting the Chief´s Mess.  Now in Naval Retirement all I have are memories and I will always remember NMCB 3.

I was with MCB 2 when it was decommissioned in August 1956 and I was transferred into MCB 3 (along with about 550 other Seabees) and sent back to Subic with MCB 3.  MCB 2 has a web page with pictures of the construction of Subic Bay at  http://mcb2seabeereunion.com/  and also some pictures of the Seabees in Korea supporting the war and Marine Air Wing (MAW) there.

You have a nice web page and I hope your next reunion in Tucson is very successful.

Best regards,

Scott

I was a PN3 in MCB three from April 1958 to August 1960 at camp Kubasaki  Okinawa.   I worked in headquarters Company for the XO  directly and also perform many personnel jobs in our Quansett hut on the edge of the parade ground. I thoroughly enjoyed my three years in the Navy and two years on Okinawa in the 1950s. Went back  three years ago and it was a big mistake as the Japanese  had completely reform the island from one of Okinawan culture and history to Japanese. Such a shame. I had a girlfriend whose name was Michiko Terakina.  I have many fond memories and I still miss her. Would like to be get in contact  with anyone who served during this time period on Okinawa.

Sitting here with memories . 4 days from now it will be the 50th anniversary of TET 68. At this time MCB-3 was preparing for MCB-8 to relieve us. Some flights may have already left. I had volunteered to stay and transfer over to MCB-8 , nothing back in the states waiting for me. I changed my mind on Feb. 1st when Richard Blevins was KIA and stayed with MCB-3. Richard made number 8 of our brothers lost during that deployment to Phu Bai , with 39 Purple Hearts earned. Next month is a mile stone for me , I turn 70 years old. Many times I thought I would not live to see tomorrow , but here I am. I was only 19 while at Phu Bai. 50 years ago and some of those memories seem like yesterday. Well enough of my rant , But on the 31st remember our brothers that didn´t get to come home with us !!!  I am on Face Book --- Love Steve !

I served alongside some great American boys/men from all parts of the U.S.A. in MCB-3 during 3 years of the Viet Nam war, 1966 thru 1969. I´m glad to have gotten to know many I served with, who I didn´t personally know then, all these years later, as they have come to the reunions and served in some capacity to promote and orchestrate them. Several of the very best have since passed on.  I want to thank my best friend in MCB3, Larry Edmondson, who I served with in Delta co., for all his work, pre internet, to make an MCB3 reunion come about. I sensed his frustration at actually making it happen, so taking the ball from him, I sent flyers out to all his data base, telling of a reunion/barbecue at my humble house just outside the Port Hueneme base, and low and behold,  we had a very successful reunion in 1999, with attendance rivaling any of the past 17 formal reunions.  I have attended half of the current reunions since 2000, when health,  finances and logistics are good. I hope to attend many more, seeing the brothers come back who no longer attend and seeing a new long lost brother show up.  I thank all our current reunion officers who contribute so much to keep this annual event going! Stay healthy and hope to see you in Gulfport.  "Fisch"

I was with MCB3 from 1967 thru first part of 1970. Phu Bai, DaNang and Port Huemene.

My last tour was running Green Issue and assigning all your "Stuff" for the In Country adventure.

I was  a SK2 in Supply and was in both advanced parties going to Phu Bai and DaNang

I  can remember arriving at the Phu Bai Camp and seeing all the Marines dug into foxholes.

We definitely made their living conditions much better

I started out in the Army in Sept 69. I finish in the Navy
in 1977. My best times was with MCB 3, I was lucky enough to be stationed in Antigua BWI. Went over as a Construction ended up a CE3. My time spent was 74-76. I loved the SeeBees, wish I would have made a career with the Navy.

I went to Builders "A" School then to NMCB-3 from 1971 to 1973. I was also attached to NMCB 133 for a project in the PI. I left the Navy and went to Kansas State University. After graduation I tried to return to the Navy but was rejected because of a knee problem. So I went to the Kansas National Guard and went on to OCS. I retired from the Army Reserve in 2006 as a LtC. A few years later I retired from the University of Florida where I was a county horticulture agent.
Would like to hear from fellow Seabees.

After CE "A" School in Port Hueneme my first duty station was Adak Alaska, left Adak in Feb. of 1970 and joined NMCB3. My first deployment was with 3 in Nam, I was on Detail Borealis in The South, Ca Mau where we turned a baron section of land into a base camp and started to build a river support base. My second tour, I was assigned to a Self Help project at a Communications base in Iba,PI. Most of the Batallion was in Guam during that tour. I was happy to be in the Phillipines.

I got out of the Navy as a CE2, I then enjoyed a great career in the Electrical industry. Presently retired from IBEW Local #3.
